

Winter, 2004The wires were wrapped around the trees in bundles of deep green, like vines, like so many coiled snakes, it looked so natural. There are thousands of themlights. He told me excitedly, and pulled my arm to stand beside him as we watched the men above us unwind yard after yard of glittering cord. There must be miles of it. I wonder how they take it down. They probably just cut it off. I offered, hands in my pockets. It was December, and we were Freshmen. So much cord wrapped like thattheres no way they could untangle it all. What a waste. The Colour of HomeThe first colour they offered us was yellow Mustard yellow-Here, they said, it's just like home But my yellow was sunflower. Not dead, Not flat like this. So we endured the yellow, we really tried. My room smelled green-a jungle, full of life. Yellow Would seep sometimes, and remind me that it Wasn't supposed to be like this. Home Wasn't supposed to be like this-blank. A place where nothing lived, could live. Dead.
